2019 in review

Welcome to 2020 from the team at Tekiu! As the dust finally settles from the holiday break Tekiu has had time to reflect on what was a fantastic year in 2019. Here’s a few highlights:

The T-DEB programme that started back in March 2018 continued, and 2019 was a year that continued to see great success. The Tekiu team has enjoyed watching truly fantastic results as over 42 UK and Turkish businesses and organisations have established over 23 partnerships between them.

As part of the T-DEB project we organised 3 cohort trips to the UK for Smart Cities, Environmental Technologies and Health & Life Sciences strands of our programme. Many thanks to our collaborating in-country partners including SEHTA, BIA, Connected Places Catapult and Cambridge Cleantech for helping to organise bespoke networking events, and a panel on the challenges facing smart cities SMEs, from which all the participating companies benefited greatly. The Tekiu team found these trips a vital part of cementing the ties between participating companies innovating across borders.

Tekiu in partnership with SKS based across Europe kicked off a joint project themed around translation of research and how companies across Europe can learn how best to translate strong university research into economic results. As part of this, Tekiu has started a podcast series - you can listen to that here. If you’re interested in getting involved with our first discovery trip from Germany to the UK find out more here.

2019 was also the end of the Doing It Together Science project, run as part of the Horizon 2020 framework. Tekiu along with 10 other partners helped to carry out 860 events reaching 500,000 people across Europe. It was a fantastic project that delivered great results, congratulations to all the organisations involved for going far beyond expectations.

Work started on the NC4EE project, funded by the National Environment Research Council. This project is led by the universities of Reading and Birmingham in partnership with the Universities of Salford, Manchester, Newcastle and UEA. Tekiu and 27 other partners will work together to re-evaluate the impacts of environmental science from a community perspective with the aim of using these insights to inform the UK’s research agenda. The programme runs until 2022, so keep an eye on us and the project for some great results.

Warm hellos...

2019 was a year of growth for Tekiu too, employing two new staff in Business Development Analyst Alan and Knowledge Transfer Manager Lloyd. Both new members mark the beginning of an exciting chapter for the company as we look to build on the outstanding work already done by the team to deliver great new Discovery Trips.

And sadly, goodbyes.

In June we said bye to our first intern Baran, who returned back to Turkey to continue his studies. Baran was with us for three months between April and July but his hard work has left a lasting legacy. Thank you Baran!

2020: More to come!

T-DEB showcase

With the Showcase Event coming up in March 2020, it will be a great opportunity for the companies in the programme to show off everything they’ve achieved in the last two years. If you haven’t yet signed up for a ticket, why not? Come see the successful results of R&D collaboration. Get your tickets here.

UK Technology Conference / Istanbul

Our Managing Director Cindy will be giving a talk on the success of T-DEB at the UK Technology Conference in Istanbul on the 17th February. She will be promoting the great work we’ve done at Tekiu on the T-DEB project. If you’re going to be there, get in touch!

ToR Germany

Our great work with SKS will deliver a Discovery Trip in the spring to the UK, bringing a selection of German TTO offices to learn about tech transfer here in the UK. We will be taking a group of German TTOs on a tour of the innovation landscape in the UK, answering the key question: What lessons can German TTOs learn to better implement their research?

Plenty more to come…

As well, we’ve other trips in the pipeline that we aren’t quite ready to talk about yet. 🤫If you’re thinking of a Discovery Trip in 2020 get in touch and see how we can help.

Best wishes,

The Tekiu team
